The cost of estate mediation depends on the dispute resolution needs that you and your particular situation require, but most Pennsylvania mediator services make several fee arrangements available to their clients, such as paying by the hour or paying a flat fee for a half day or whole day.
When a court requires parties to go through the mediation process, it makes available a list of volunteer mediators who work for a nominal fee. When parties want a professional Pennsylvania mediator, however, they can expect to pay at least $1,000 each per day for mediation services. Some offices may charge on a sliding scale as well.
The benefits far outweigh the cost of estate mediation, however, and include:
- control of the solution, enabling conflicting parties to make decisions that establish a common ground;
- confidentiality;
- voluntary participation;
- the possibility of relationship preservation;
- cost-effectiveness;
- quick resolution; and
- flexibility.
The value of mediation outweighs the cost by far, when you take into consideration the inevitable alternative to failed mediation, which is costly and lengthy litigation in court. On average, the cost of even filing lawsuit papers can match or exceed the cost of hiring a mediator for a day.
The real way to consider the cost vs. value of a mediation session is to consider its cost compared to that of a trial. On average, the cost of simply filing your initial papers for a lawsuit is between $500 and $1500. This price does not include the fees your lawyer charges for researching and drafting the papers. After this, the attorney will do further investigation and begin filing motions, each of which is usually another $500 to file.
